Natural Stone in Adapazarı: Historical Roots and 2026 Market

Adapazarı is the commercial hub of Sakarya province and one of Turkey's most dynamic secondary construction markets. For Sipahi Marble — founded in Serdivan, adjacent to Adapazarı, in 1989 — the Adapazarı natural stone market has been our closest observatory for more than 35 years. Through direct field experience spanning over three decades, we share the historical evolution of the Adapazarı natural stone sector, the transformative impact of the 1999 earthquake, the technological changes of the 2000s and the current market landscape of 2026.

1989: The Beginning of Adapazarı's Natural Stone Sector

Sipahi Marble began operations in Serdivan in 1989 with small-scale cutting and polishing equipment. At that time, natural stone demand in Adapazarı centred on floor paving, stair treads and window sills. The buyer profile consisted of individual homeowners and small construction craftsmen.

Adapazarı's 1989 building stock was largely made up of low-rise structures. The natural stone category had not yet developed its present breadth; façade cladding was very limited and the concept of a granite kitchen countertop was barely known.

The 1990s: Era of Small Family Workshops

In the 1990s the Adapazarı natural stone sector was composed largely of small family workshops. Hand-cutting and primitive polishing machines were common; CNC technology did not yet exist. Supply chains were short-distance: blocks arriving from Afyon and the Marmara basin were processed in Adapazarı. During this period Sipahi Marble established itself as one of Adapazarı's pioneering natural stone firms.

The 1999 Marmara Earthquake: A Turning Point for Adapazarı

The 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake was among the most severe to strike Adapazarı. Thousands of buildings were damaged or destroyed. This destruction triggered a reconstruction phase and drove unexpected growth in natural stone demand across the city.

The rebuilding process sharpened preference for durable and resilient materials. Awareness of safety in façade systems grew and interest in mechanically anchored systems increased significantly. Sipahi Marble expanded its capacity during this period and contributed to major projects in Adapazarı's reconstruction.

The 2000s: CNC and the Modernisation of the Sector

In the early 2000s CNC technology entered the Adapazarı natural stone sector. Precise cutting, standardised dimensions, serial production and shorter lead times modernised the industry. Sipahi Marble made its CNC investment during this period and raised the quality standard in the Adapazarı market.

Residential projects in Adapazarı also began growing at this time: TOKİ social housing, private construction firms and renewed urban fabric drove higher natural stone demand. Granite kitchen countertops began to appear routinely in Adapazarı homes during these years.

The 2010s: Commercial Projects and Institutional Demand

The 2010s saw a marked rise in hotel, hospital, business plaza and public-sector investment in Adapazarı. Sipahi Marble shifted alongside this trend to serve institutional buildings in addition to residential projects. Reference projects completed in this period include Balturk Hotel, Grand Hotel Sakarya, Özel Medar Hospital and KampüsAray Student Residence.
