Engineered quartz is a man-made stone produced by combining natural quartz crystals (roughly 90–93%) with resin and pigments under high pressure. By pairing natural stone's aesthetic richness with a non-porous, homogeneous surface, engineered quartz has become the fastest-growing category in the kitchen and bathroom countertop market.
Its popularity rests on a near-non-porous structure compared with natural marble and granite, which means no need for protective impregnation; colour and pattern consistency across the slab; and markedly higher stain and acid resistance than natural stone. These qualities make engineered quartz especially attractive for heavily used family kitchens and rental properties.
Another key difference from natural stone is that production runs under standardised factory conditions; where natural stone can vary in colour and pattern from quarry to quarry — even block to block within the same quarry — engineered quartz, per the manufacturer's formula, can reproduce the same look on every slab ordered. That consistency is a real practical advantage on projects fitting out many similar units — a housing development, apartment block or hotel.
Another advantage of engineered quartz is hygiene performance on surfaces in direct food contact; its non-porous structure makes bacteria and microbe growth harder than on natural stone. This is one reason engineered quartz is favoured in commercial kitchens and food-preparation areas.
