Why Marble and Granite Need Different Care

Marble and granite share the 'natural stone' label but differ fundamentally in mineralogy. Marble is calcite-based, moderately porous and acid-sensitive. Granite is silicate-based, very low porosity and chemically robust.

The critical rule for marble: avoid all acid-containing products. Vinegar, lemon juice, orange-based cleaners and carbonated drinks can cause immediate dull spots (chemical etching) on a polished marble surface. Granite is far more tolerant — though even granite countertops benefit from prompt removal of acidic cooking residue.

Daily Cleaning Protocol

Use a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth for all daily cleaning. After wet-mopping or wiping, dry the surface promptly with a clean soft cloth — especially in hard-water areas where mineral deposits build quickly. Avoid soap or detergent-based cleaners; these leave a residue film that progressively dulls the stone's appearance. Use only cleaners specifically formulated for natural stone.

Stain Removal Methods

Oil stains (cooking oil, butter): spread white chalk powder or talc on the stain, leave for 24 hours to absorb the oil, then remove with a dry cloth. Repeat if necessary.

Wine and fruit juice: wipe immediately with a damp cloth and neutral cleaner. For old, set stains, a hydrogen peroxide-based poultice may help — test on an inconspicuous area first.

Tea and coffee: careful application of a diluted hydrogen peroxide cleaner. Always patch-test on marble before full application.

Old oil stains on granite: small amount of acetone or isopropyl alcohol on a cloth — use sparingly and wipe dry immediately.

Marble Crystallisation (Surface Re-polishing)

Crystallisation is the chemical-mechanical process of restoring a marble floor's polish. For polished marble floors in medium-to-high traffic areas, crystallisation is recommended every 1–3 years depending on wear. The process uses a calcium fluoride-based chemical solution applied with a rotary polishing machine. It partially closes surface pores, reduces micro-roughness and restores the high-gloss finish.

Impregnation Sealing (Subsurface Protection)

An impregnating sealer penetrates the stone's pore structure and forms a hydrophobic and oleophobic barrier that prevents water and oil-based substances from being absorbed. For marble and travertine, sealing is recommended immediately after installation and then every 2–5 years. Granite also benefits from sealing, but its low porosity means the interval can be longer. Sealers do not change the stone's appearance — they protect from within.

Joint Maintenance

Stone surface joints are the most commonly neglected element of long-term maintenance. Cracked, detached or discoloured joints invite water infiltration, sub-surface movement and potential panel displacement over time. Annual joint inspection is recommended. Deteriorated joints in dry areas should be replaced with acrylic filler; wet areas (bathrooms, outdoor) should use silicone to prevent mould growth.

Façade Marble Maintenance

Exterior marble and granite cladding faces weather exposure that interior surfaces do not. Annual low-pressure washing (30–40 bar) is recommended to remove atmospheric deposits. If efflorescence (salt bloom) develops on the surface, specialist treatment with a diluted acid solution may be required — this should be handled by a professional. All silicone façade joints should be inspected every 5 years and renewed where necessary.

Annual Granite Floor Maintenance Schedule

January–March: mechanical cleaning (wet/dry) and visual inspection. Note any cracked or displaced panels.

April–June: joint integrity check; apply impregnating sealer if due.

July–September: post-peak-traffic wear assessment; localised re-polishing if needed.

October–December: pre-winter façade silicone joint check; ensure exterior granite is dry-stored before freeze-thaw cycles begin.
